The typical kdrama pattern is to spend a lot of time with great characters, fall in love with them, and then marvel at how the writers completely botch the final episode. The trend is completely reversed in Longing Heart. You can expect almost the entire 10-episode run to be a complete disaster, but the final episode wraps everything up beautifully. That came as a complete surprise and saved the drama.

STORY

It's a jumble and makes no sense, but I think the concept is sound. If you're of a certain age, you've probably reflected on your high school years and wished you could go back in time "What a moron. I wish I had the ability to correct some issues." That, in a nutshell, is the story. The MC meets his younger self and meddles in his life very aggressively, which leads to the majority of the comedy here.

It's amusing and adorable! However, there are never really any "rules" for the time slip, which is bad form, and there isn't even a hint of an explanation, which is also bad form. So, don't think too hard about what's going on, or you'll become irritated. The show gets less and less funny as it goes on. And since that's the show's real strength, it's only going to get worse. But once you get to Episode 10, things will start to fall into place, so hang in there.

ACTING/CAST

This is where the majority of the show's tedium originates. Not only is it poorly directed, resulting in some scenes being completely ruined by otherwise talented actors, but there is also a severe lack of chemistry among the entire cast. There are several romantic pairings here, but none of them, including the OTP, ring true. We only get one kissing scene, and it's one of the worst I've ever seen in 70+ dramas.

Jo Seung Hee's character was one of the few characters who drew my attention. She portrays a teacher who has a number of hilarious scenes with the main character. Her bold flirting and endearing mannerisms made her a delight to watch, and Seung Hee pulled it off with ease. However, she is barely used at all, and her romance arc is dreadful and devoid of any redeeming qualities.

She and the actor with whom she was paired had no chemistry at all. Furthermore, her status as the brightest and best of the characters was tarnished by the fact that she was paired with the show's worst character. It was difficult to watch.

Do Hee is excellent, as usual, but her character is misrepresented. Kim Sun Young, who really stood out here, was probably the best pure actor in the show. She was perfect in every scene she was in. But, once again, we don't see a lot of her. Song Ji Hyun was cute and talented at being quirky and moody, but melo was not her strong suit.

Even so, it was cool to see a Korean Emily Blunt impersonator. Her distinct appearance is quite appealing, and I'd like to see her get a few more roles. Seo Ji Hoon was also a hit with my wife (but I have no idea why, since to me he was completely unremarkable). The rest of the cast was a complete letdown. Lee Yeol Eum, who was so good in High School King of Savvy, fails miserably in this film. She requires a better director or a more interesting role to play. She didn't have much of a personality. Lee Jung Shin was charming and amusing, but he sometimes overacted. Lee Joo Hyung was a brazenly unlikable character. The rest of the show was completely forgettable.

To be honest, the drama's pace probably hurts this category more than the actors themselves. Not only is it short, but it also wastes a lot of time. As a result, we don't get to spend much time with the characters and really get to know them. As a result, the actors have a lot less to work with when it comes to developing their characters.

The MUSIC is decent, with at least one good vocal theme, but the REWATCH VALUE is low, with only the early comedy and the final episode saving it.

OVERALL

Believe everyone who claims that Longing Heart could have been even shorter and still maintained its quality. While the show is sweet and simple, it is also mostly boring and spends a lot of time flashing back to things we've seen recently, sometimes as recently as 60 seconds ago. This is countered by some very good humor and a few plot twists and surprises, making it a quick watch that shouldn't leave you with too many regrets.

FINAL RATING: 7/10
