The Legend of the Blue Sea

The Legend of the Blue Sea is a South Korean television series starring Jun Ji-hyun and Lee Min-ho that aired from 2016 to 2017. This drama portrays the love story of a con-artist and a mermaid who goes across the ocean to find him, based on a legendary Joseon legend from Korea's earliest collection of unofficial historical tales about a fisherman who captures and releases a mermaid.

From November 16, 2016, through January 25, 2017, the series broadcast every Wednesday and Thursday at 22:00 on SBS (KST). The series peaked with a 21.0 percent viewership rating.

Synopsis

Shim Cheong (Jun Ji-hyun), a mermaid, and Heo Joon-jae (Lee Min-ho), a smart con-artist, are the central characters in the series. Their journey is paired with the parallel story of their Joseon-era incarnations, the mermaid Se-hwa and town chief Kim Dam-ryeong, which focuses on reincarnation, fate, and unrequited love.

Se-hwa and Dam-ryeong

During the Joseon dynasty, a mermaid saves Kim Dam-ryeong, the son of a nobleman, from drowning. Following the tragedy, the two youngsters become fast friends, and Dam-ryeong gives her the name Se-hwa, which means "a brilliant, sparkling kid," in honor of his departed younger sister. Despite the fact that they come from two different cultures, they fall in love, and Dam-ryeong is compelled to enter into an arranged marriage.

Se-hwa wants to live on the land with Dam-ryeong, but she hasn't achieved adulthood yet and can't change her fishtail into a set of human legs. She resolves to leave Dam-ryeong forever after hearing the news of his marriage. Despite this, Dam-passion ryeong's for Se-hwa compels him to abandon his bride on their wedding night and dive into the sea in search of her. Se-hwa, distressed, saves him from drowning and then erases his memory of her and their love so he won't search for her again.

During years apart, their paths cross again as adults when Se-hwa is discovered stranded in a cave after a storm by town residents and brought before Dam-ryeong, now a widower town official. Despite the fact that Dam-ryeong has no recollection of Se-hwa, he takes pity on her and releases her. This enrages the village innkeeper, aristocrat Yang Seung-gil, who had planned to use Se-hwa for his own financial gain.

Yang schemes to depose Dam-ryeong with the help of his materialistic concubine, Hong Nan, as he murders those who stand in his path and spreads rumors that Dam-ryeong is unsuitable to reign because he has been charmed by an evil mermaid, allowing him to kidnap Se-hwa while the village panics. Dam-ryeong saves Se-hwa, who has been tortured by Yang and his concubine in order to extract her tears, which are transformed into rare sea pearls. Dam-ryeong brings Se-hwa to the sea to recover, while Yang and his concubine are jailed.

Dam-ryeong, who has been having nightmares about himself, Se-hwa, and their opponents in the future, is worried that the same destiny that has befallen him and Se-hwa would befall him and Se-hwa. To warn his future self, he commissions a time capsule holding a portrait of himself along with a letter warning him that "everything is repeating itself" and that he must safeguard Se-reincarnation hwa's from harm, namely from Yang's reincarnations and anybody connected to him.

Dam-ryeong is enraged and vows to murder Yang and disclose all of his misdeeds until the court exiles him and removes him from his post as a result of the rumors. While Dam-ryeong is being led on a boat to begin his exile, Yang and his accomplices resume their hunt for Se-hwa by establishing a trap with lights, and she is attracted to the surface, mistaking it for Dam-signal. ryeong's Yang's troops lash out at Se-hwa with nets, arrows, and harpoons. Dam-ryeong,

prompted by his suspicions after spotting the floating lanterns from afar, orders that the boat turn back, resulting in a battle between the guards and Yang's men. Dam-ryeong dives into the ocean just before Yang's son impales him from behind with a harpoon, rescuing Se-hwa. Se-hwa plunges the harpoon further into Dam-torso ryeong's and stabs herself as he dies in her arms. Dam-jadeite ryeong's bracelet, which he had given Se-hwa earlier, drops off Se-hand hwa's as she dies and is lost to the ocean when the boats sink, dragging Dam-things ryeong's with them.

After the surviving authorities clear Dam-ryeong of the false allegations, Yang and his concubine are hanged for their crimes. Yang had extorted and poisoned a merchant, and the businessman's son Park Moo seeks vengeance on his father.
